A couple of friends have pledged to kayak the length of the River Ouse to boost water safety.
Andy Fearn and David Warner plan to travel the full 56 miles of the river, starting at Aldwark and finishing at Blacktoft on the mouth of the Humber.
Their epic two-day charity kayak, which starts on Saturday, 27 August, will raise funds for York Rescue Boat.
“The River Ouse has become an ever increasing risk over recent years and the work that this charity does is second to none,” Andy said.
On their JustGiving page, the pair say: “Twenty-one people have drowned in the last 5 years and the average age has changed from 26 years old to 68.
“It used to be young people getting into trouble after a swim or a night out but more and more it’s down to older people with complex mental health issues.”
They want to support the amazing work of the York Rescue Boat volunteers, who provide a lifeboat and search and rescue team on both the Ouse and the Foss.
