An inquest opened today into the tragic death of York teenager Leah Bedford.
Leah, 16, from Acomb, went missing on 20 September.
A police underwater unit found her body in the River Ouse in York eight days later.
Senior coroner for York and North Yorkshire Jon Heath opened the inquest at midday today (Tuesday).
He told Northallerton Coroners Court that Leah Evelyn Audrey Bedford was born on 17 February 2007 in York.
At the time of her death she lived at Howe Hill Hostel on Acomb Road.
Mr Heath said Leah was last seen at 3.57am on 20 September near Lendal Bridge. She was reported missing later the same day.
On 28 September at 12.29pm her body was recovered from the River Ouse near Terry Avenue.
The provisional cause of death is unascertained, he said.
Mr Heath adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed in order for further enquiries to be carried out.
In a moving tribute, Leah was described as “young, bubbly, strong, and very well loved” by her devastated family.
They have launched a campaign to install riverside CCTV cameras to help prevent another tragedy.
