An innovative restaurant in York will close next month – 14 months after opening.

Izakaya, the Japanese restaurant that opened on Grape Lane in December 2022, will shut on 23 February.

But the co-owners hope that is not the end of the Izakaya story. Meanwhile, a brand new venture is set to operate from the venue soon.

Business partners Adam Johnson and Danny Victory first met at Spark:York – where Michelin-trained chef Danny served Japanese-inspired food at Shori, while Adam owned Bohemian Bar.

They teamed up to create Izakaya which specialised in Japanese-style dishes and cocktails.

In a joint statement, Adam and Danny said: “Over the past 14 months, we poured our hearts and souls into crafting our beloved restaurant, Izakaya.

“Despite our best efforts, external factors have led us to the tough decision of putting Izakaya on hold.

“Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to our loyal customers, dedicated suppliers, and the incredible staff, both past and present.”

They described the venture as “a place of experimentation” which featured everything from small plates to a tasting menu.

“However, as we navigated through the changing seasons, cost pressures of rising energy bills, labour costs, ingredients and our unwavering commitment to building a sustainable operation was challenging,” Adam and Danny said.

“We have worked tirelessly to craft an excellent product and restaurant. Ultimately these external pressures have taken their toll.”

It was something new for York

Higher costs, and a public with less spending power, created a tough market “where crafting a financially sustainable business proved to be elusive”.

But they plan to go out in culinary style. Their winter menus will finish on 10 February, followed by a series of special dishes for the final two weeks.

The pair said: “The Valentine Omakase tasting menu on February 14th will be a fitting conclusion to this chapter, followed by an ever-changing menu from February 15th to 23rd, celebrating the diverse dishes we’ve shared throughout the past year.

“Before bidding farewell, we invite you to join us at Izakaya for a memorable final experience.”

You can find out more and book at the website.

Confirmed bookings before 10 February will remain unchanged, Adam and Danny said. They will be in touch with everyone who has bookings after that date.

You can contact Adam at [email protected] or call the restaurant at 01904 610370.

And in early March, a new venture will operate from 21 Grape Lane. More details are promised next month.

Adam and Danny hope this isn’t the end of the Izakaya story, saying: “To our loyal customers, dedicated staff, and valued suppliers, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Every journey runs its course, and Izakaya’s journey has come to an end – for now.”
