Technical problems have hit the Sainsbury’s store network today (Saturday).
Computer issues mean it will not be able to fulfil the “vast majority” of online grocery deliveries.
And some stores are accepting cash only – including the Sainsbury’s Local on Micklegate in York.
There have been problems with contactless payments due to an error with an overnight software update, although all stores were open as usual.
Sainsbury’s Monks Cross shared a Facebook page saying stores were “accepting chip and pin and cash payments”.
But one Monks Cross customer shared this message on X: “I hope you’re going to do more than refund the orders, people have to take time out of their day, fuel costs etc, to turn up to the store and then get told I can go in store to do my shopping but need to drive two miles to another cashpoint is a joke. Monks cross York.”
The supermarket chain apologised to customers. A statement said: “We’re experiencing technical issues affecting some stores, our Groceries Online service and our ability to contact customers.
“Unfortunately, we will not be able to fulfil the vast majority of today’s Groceries Online deliveries.
“We are working hard to fix the issue and apologise to our customers for the inconvenience.
“We will contact customers proactively to rebook orders as soon as we can.”
Argos, which is owned by Sainsbury’s, has also been affected by the software update, meaning customers may have issues with ordering new items or collecting orders in-store.
It said there may be delays in fulfilling orders placed on Saturday.
