It is loved and hated in equal measure. And now it could be yours if you have £6m to spare.
Stonebow House, including the shops, services and flats, is now on the market for £5.96m.
It is “a rare opportunity to purchase a substantial prime city centre holding comprising a total site area of 0.47 acres,” according to the Oakgate Group, which has put it on sale.
The details go on: “Stonebow House is situated at a key gateway to the city of York and was originally completed in 1965.
“The property was most recently acquired in 2015 and has been comprehensively refurbished and transformed into a mixed-use development comprising luxury flats sitting above commercial retail units.”

It adds: “The property totals 49,905 sq ft and produces a total rental income of £422,625 pa.”
Since its redevelopment, the building comprises 17 flats with rooftop car park and three retail units. These are occupied by
- the Co-op, which pays £103K per year in rent
- the Roxy Ball Room games bar, which pays £200K a year
- the Mydentist practice, which pays £115K a year.
Stonebow House was built in 1964, following York’s slum clearance programme, and designed by Wells, Hickman and Partners.
Its brutalist architectural style divided opinion, with it featuring in worst building lists in the UK because of its imposing nature.
That was before the Oakgate Group redeveloped the building.
