A man who died in a hit-and-run collision in West Yorkshire had volunteered at a top York sports club for almost 40 years.
Brian McClure sadly died at the scene after being struck by a car on Barnsdale Road, Castleford, at 2:43pm on Tuesday 18 February.
Mr McClure, 74, had a love for rugby and had been involved with York RUFC since the 1970’s.
He started as a player for the team in its heyday, later taking on the role of Honorary Secretary in 1987.
Mr McClure was approaching his 40th year in post for the club.
A tribute from York RUFC read:
“It is with immense sadness that we must report the passing away of one of our staunchest, most loyal and well-loved personalities within the Club.”
Mr McClure is remembered for his supportive nature and passion for the sport. He was often found on the sidelines watching 1st and 2nd teams, Women’s team and Social games.
He was also a regular attendee at Junior games, always happy to engage with spectators, parents and players at various levels.
York RUFC added, “There was rarely a Sunday morning when he wouldn’t be seen supporting the various teams in Yorkshire cup games or Friendlies.”
Mr McClure particularly enjoyed watching his family play – his son, Neil, and more recently his Grandson, Alfie.
He also leaves behind his loving wife, Margaret, daughter Kathryn, and his wider family and friends.
On Thursday, his family released the following tribute:
“We are sorry to announce the loss of Brian McClure. Brian was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
“A kind, warm and loving man, he will be hugely missed by all. A life cruelly cut short.”
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving while over the prescribed limit.
He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr McClure’s death and are appealing for any witnesses, or any dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
A spokesperson from West Yorkshire Police said:
“Officers from the Major Collision Enquiry Team are keen to hear from anyone who saw the collision or the car in the time before or after it, as well as anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage.
“You can contact West Yorkshire Police online, or by calling 101 quoting reference 13250095351.”
