A much loved York pub is now on the market.
The Red Lion, located on Merchantgate, has been put up for sale.
Located in the heart of York, the Grade II listed building is one of the city’s most historic pubs.
The Red Lion is listed at £175,000, and is described as, ‘A traditional public house with ground floor trading and good outside spaces catering for a mixture of regular locals and tourists and a good mix of wet and dry trade.’
It has indoor and outdoor seating areas, as well as a three-bedroom owner’s accommodation.
It was built originally as a house in the 1400’s and had extensions added during both the 17th and 18th centuries.
Legend has it, Dick Turpin once escaped through the window of the pub.
In recent years, the Red Lion has become well known for outdoor sports viewing, traditional pub food, and its traditional cosy fireplace.
The current owner, Pete Pendlebury, took over the pub in 2010 and has seen the business through tough times including the pandemic and major floods in 2016.
Pete has previously been a landlord of a number of pubs across the city, including The Ackhorne and The Beeswing.
Up until 1805, the Red Lion was known as The Three Cups.
The pub had to be renamed to avoid confusion with another pub of the same name in the immediate vicinity on Foss Bridge.
