A fashion brand which left York 18 months ago is to return with a new shop in a fresh location.
Womenswear store Bonmarche closed its store on Goodramgate in June 2022 after a troubled year which saw it launch not one but two closing down sales.
The closure took place after the brand fell into administration.
Now, though, Bonmarche is bouncing back with a series of shop openings – and one is set to take place in York.
It is set to move into the the Coppergate Centre.
Plans are in for Bonmarche to take over the former Boots building in St Mary’s Square. It has most recently been occupied by Utopia Womenswear.
Utopia is on the move again. It has previously occupied shops on Spurriergate and Church Street, as well as in a different unit in the Coppergate Centre.
Now, though, it is moving into Coney Street, in the unit that was temporarily home to the StreetLife printing exhibition.
Based in Wakefield, Bonmarche was founded in 1982 and at one time had 300 stores.
When it first fell into administration in 2019, it put 2,700 jobs at risk.
It was then saved by Peacocks, but 30 of its around 300 branches closed.
The business collapsed for a second time in 2020 in the middle of the coronavirus crisis when Peacocks fell into administration.
But the brand is rebuilding and reopening stores in various city centre locations.
