Hidden cameras help catch fly tipper who repeatedly dumped waste

Selby District Council has successfully prosecuted a fly tipper who repeatedly dumped waste in Cridling Stubbs (south of the M62) last summer.

All the fly tipping offences were captured on the Council’s CCTV cameras which had been placed in this fly tipping hotspot. The footage of the fly tipping incidents was played in court.

Lee Adlington (36) of Glebelands, Knottingley fly tipped rubble and household waste on five separate occasions on Beal Lane between 1 and 5 June 2021.

Mr Adlington pleaded guilty under section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to the five counts of fly tipping and was fined £2,870 when he appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court . 

In addition, he was ordered to pay costs of £1,110.75.

Cllr Tim Grogan, Lead Executive Member for Health and Culture, said

“This sends out a clear message to anyone who looks to commit this kind of offence within our district that the council will prosecute fly-tippers.

“We have a number of cameras strategically placed to capture those committing this most appalling offence that blights our beautiful countryside.”

Cllr Grogan went on to say that the Council’s enforcement team are committed to doing all they can to deter fly tipping and work with partners across the region to do so. 

“They are tenacious and investigate every fly tip and I am aware that we have other cases currently being investigated as a result of evidence found.”
