A landmark York store could soon be buzzing again as a leading retailer plans to take it over.

Found on the corner of Coney Street and Market Street in York, the building was a jewellers for many years.

After trading under the Fraser Hart brand, it became Mappin and Webb in 2020 – but this store moved to Davygate last year.

It’s been empty ever since. But soon it could become a big new Lush store.

The cosmetics chain has applied for permission to City of York Council put up its signage at the store.

Illuminated and projected signs with the words “Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics” would be added to the front if permission is granted.

Lush currently trades from a smaller shop at 3 Coney Street. We have contacted the retailer to ask whether this branch will close and for more details about their plans, but they haven’t replied yet.

The store is earmarked for demolition under plans to remodel Coney Street put forward by the Helmsley Group.

Lush is now at 3 Coney Street
The store has four floors

The large corner building was built in 1931 and is Grade II listed. It was originally built for Burton’s Tailors.

It has more than 5,000 sq ft spread over four floors, including a basement.

In letting details from agents Stapleton Warehouse, the rent was given at £125K per year, with rates of £52,430.

“The property is located in a prime position on Coney Street, York’s main retailing thoroughfare, located within the historic and shopping heart of York city centre,” the details said.

“Helmsley Group has submitted plans for its Coney Street Riverside major regeneration project that includes the creation of 250,000 sq ft of mixed-use retail, leisure, commercial, residential, student and extensive public realm.”
