A new business is moving into an empty unit on York’s Parliament Street – and couldn’t be more different to what was there before.

Number 10 was last home to Project D the doughnut shop. It opened in October 2023 with a giveaway of 500 free doughnuts.

The first bricks-and-mortar store by the Derby-based business, it closed last April citing location and logistical challenges.

The block has been empty since then. But plans are now in to install two cash machines at the front of the shop.

That’s because it’s set to become a branch of Global Exchange, a currency exchange business with a head office in London.

It’s got one director, Isidoro Jose Alanis Marcos, who’s based in Spain.

The business has eight branches in London and four in Bristol, but none in the north of England.

However, its website claims it has 423 branches in 25 countries and carries out more than 22,000 transactions a day.

It is asking City of York Council for permission to install the two ATMs, one on either side of the door.

Planning documents state: “Inside the shopfront behind the doors, there will be a solid roller shutter which will be lowered while the ATMs are being serviced.

“These measures will screen and provide security while the ATMs are being serviced.

“The ATMS will be anchored to the floor according to the manufacturer’s instructions to provide the theft resistance according to the applicable guidance and resistance level required.”

The exterior of the shop will be decked out in blue and have new signage.
