Selby District Council is asking people to get involved in ambitious long-term plans about new homes, business growth and local services such as schools.

It’s part of the development of a new Local Plan. This will set a framework for future development in the district up to 2040.

It’ll be used by the council to guide decisions on planning applications and to support work with developers.

The consultation will take place over six weeks from 29 January to 12 March. Residents, businesses and community groups can get involved by visiting selby.gov.uk/localplan.

Deputy leader of the council Cllr Richard Musgrave said the Local Plan is the “guide to what can be built where, shaping infrastructure investments, and determining the future pattern of development.

“It strikes an important balance between the need for development, regeneration and renewal and the protection of the natural and historic environment.

The plan makes sure that future development will take place in a planned way, supported by improvements to highways, schools, healthcare facilities and other local infrastructure.

“This means we can continue to attract investment that creates jobs, opportunities and good quality homes.”

The Local Plan has four key themes – housing, environment, communities, and employment.

It also includes proposals for a new garden village in the district. It would comprise 3,000 new homes, and three potential locations have been identified:

  • the former Burn Airfield
  • the former Church Fenton Airfield, and
  • greenfield land to the east of the old Stillingfleet mine.

Residents’ comments will inform the final version of the plan which will be subject to further consultation before it is sent to the Secretary of State when it will be subject to examination by an independent inspector.
