Have you spotted Rufus the Red Bear around York?
What started as a heartfelt gift from a father to his daughter has grown into a city-wide movement of kindness, connection, and mental health awareness with.
Rufus the Red Bear began life as a childhood toy – and after years of love and memories, he was placed outside the family for someone else to enjoy, as the children had outgrown him.

Now Rufus is off having adventures of his own! The giant red bear has become a bit of a local celebrity, and has been spotted on social media having fun across York.
“A friend messaged me to say he was popping up all over Facebook,” said Lucy, his original owner. “It’s been incredible to watch.”
Rufus’s journey has since taken him from helping out at Waste Warriors York, kayaking with York Canoe Club, having fun at several schools and nurseries, riding a horse, arranging flowers at Floral Elegance, and even meeting fellow famous bear Paddington at a charity event in Museum Gardens.
But Rufus’s adventures have a deeper purpose. His original family chose to support York Mind in memory of a beloved nephew who is missed dearly every single day. They shared, “That’s why we want Rufus to raise as much as possible and to continue spread some cheer along the way.”
With the help of his booking agent, Dani Louise, Rufus is now booked visiting local businesses, community groups, and events to raise awareness and funds for York Mind.
A JustGiving page has been set up for Rufus’ adventures to donate to York Mind. Follow along with Rufus’ journey here.
