The road misery that began all the way back on 1 September finally came to an end this afternoon (Friday, 4 October).
A lane closure on the York outer ring road has generated five weeks of daily jams.
Now though, the lane on the A64 between Fulford and Askham Bar has reopened.
It was shut by National Highways after a vehicle crashed into the bridge at the start of September.
The bridge parapet was damaged. A replacement part was needed, but this had to be manufactured to order.
During the wait, the inside lane was coned off – regularly bringing rush hour and weekend traffic to a standstill.
This led to knock-on jams on the A19 and Tadcaster Road.
Originally, motorists were told that the road would be fully reopened on 30 September. Then it was revealed that the work to repair the bridge wouldn’t start until yesterday.
It was anticipated that it would take until Sunday to be fixed. Happily, however, the repairs were completed and the lane reopened today.
National Highways Yorkshire said: “The lane closure on the A64 eastbound between the A1036 (Askham Bar) and the A19 (Fulford) has now been lifted and the road is now fully open.
“The parapet on the bridge over the River Ouse near Bishopthorpe has now been successfully replaced.
“The parapet had been badly damaged in a vehicle collision on 1 September, with one lane needing to be closed for safety.
“Thank you for your patience while this work has been completed.”
Happy driving everyone!
