Plans to turn vacant units in York’s Monks Cross Shopping Park into an Everlast Gym are set to go before councillors this week.
The plans to install a mezzanine floor in Units 12A and 12B of the Shopping Park are set to be heard at York Council’s Planning Committee B on Thursday, June 20.
Plans stated the location would offer good access to the gym from York via the A1237 and A64 outer ring road.
It follows the submission of the plans earlier this year for the units which have stood vacant since 2018.
They once housed H&M and Evans and previous planning documents lodged since showed there has been difficulties finding new tenants.
A council report on Everlast’s plans stated the space has been marketed for more than two years but no other prospective occupants have shown interest.
Council planning officers have recommended that the application be approved.
Huntington Parish Council, whose area covers Monks Cross Shopping Park, has raised no objections.
Agents for the applicant have stated that the three-floor vacant Topman in St Mary’s Square, Coppergate was too large to be considered as an alternative city centre site.
Plans stated that the opening hours of the gym would be 6am to 10pm Monday to Thursday and it would close at 9pm on Fridays.
It would open from 8am to 6pm at weekends.
Everlast currently operates almost 60 gyms nationally and each one has an average of about 3,000 members.
One has recently opened in Rotherham and other Yorkshire locations include Leeds, Barnsley, Sheffield and Hull.
The Monks Cross gym would cover a total area of 2,136sqm across two floors.
Everlast Gyms offer personal and instructor-led group training.
Everlast, which began as an American boxing company, launched its UK chain of gyms in 2021.
