See Green Day’s chart-topping 2004 album American Idiot come to life – as the musical version rocks on to the York stage.
Green Day’s American Idiot is at Joseph Rowntree Theatre from Thursday 4 to Saturday 6 July 2024.
The punk rock musical will open on the poignant date of 4 July – Independence Day in America and Election Day in the UK, and will also mark the 20th anniversary of Green Day’s iconic album.
The show is being put on by local musical theatre group Bright Light Musical Productions, which was founded in 2022.
Inspired by Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’, it tells the story of Johnny and his friends, Will and Tunny, as they attempt to break out of their mind-numbing, aimless suburban existence – and features hits such as ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, ‘Holiday’, and ’21 Guns’.
It features a cast of 14, a seven-piece rock band, and creative team Dan Crawfurd-Porter (producer/director), Matthew Peter Clare (music director), and Freya McIntosh (choreographer/assistant director).
Director Dan Crawfurd-Porter, said, “This show is a powerful statement about a world that remains unchanged since the original album’s release in 2004.
“Its relevance to young people today is as strong as ever, with its commentary on America and politics resonating deeply this year, especially on July 4th.
“Personally, the issues it tackles have affected me profoundly, as they have many others. The aim is to give a voice to those who feel unheard, just as it has given one to me.”
Tickets are £18 and are available via the Joseph Rowntree Theatre website. Don’t miss what will surely be a memorable and high-energy performance.
