Grassroots this week was an absolute joy, because I got to see a sport I’ve not seen before, up close and personal.
I was invited to Energise Leisure Centre in Acomb, to meet the York Minxsters and be introduced to the world of Roller Derby!
Not only was it full contact, energetic and tactical, it was brilliant fun!
My hat is tipped to anyone brave enough to take part!

About York Minxsters
We are York Minxters Roller Derby, York’s only Roller Derby league – we cater to everyone age 8+
We have three teams:
Minxters: Our WFTDA aligned competing team (Individuals who identify as: women, trans woman, intersex woman, non-binary and/or gender expansive) 18+
Monsters: Our Open to All (OTA) challenge team, an inclusive training programme for all genders 18+
The Yorkshire Terrors: Open to all young people aged 8 -18 years
Roller derby is a fast paced, full-contact team sport played on quad roller skates. It is played worldwide with an inclusive culture to all.
No previous skating experience is necessary. We provide regular new intake sessions and our next Minxters and Monsters intake will be January 2024. Please keep an eye on our social media for sign ups.
Unfortunately due to our small sports hall size we don’t have space for spectators at our games, however if you already play we have a great scrim coming up and sign ups can be found here.
