It’s that time of year when people run to their nearest supermarket before Mother’s Day on Sunday (27 March) to grab a card, flowers, and some chocolates as a thank you to our mums for all they do for us.
So instead of supporting the many national supermarkets in York this Mother’s Day, why not opt for shopping local at places that aren’t damaging the environment?
Gifts – where and what to buy?
The Giftery & The Small Shop of Changes, Burton Stone Lane is “two shops in one! A gift shop with a zero-waste lifestyle shop beside it.”
Here you can find gift ideas, cards and gift wrap which is from 100% recycled material. They are also great supporters of local artists.
Shared Earth, Low Petergate: This Fairtrade, eco and ethical shop has a range of Mother’s Day gifts including things for the garden, jewellery, and candles.
The company welcomes customers to their York branch on Low Petergate or to their online store where delivery is still possible for Mother’s Day.
You can also pick out the perfect card for your mum and know that it’s made from 100% recycled card.
Just Candle Co, Clifton: The only way you can go wrong with a candle for Mother’s Day is if you’re buying one that isn’t sustainable!
Just Candle Co plants trees and helps the homeless with money made from selling eco-friendly, affordable, scented candles.
The company handmakes the candles in small batches out of 100% natural wax and every sale helps a charity.
Pop into the shop down Wigginton Lane or order online. They dispatch quickly so there’s still time to order before Mother’s Day.
Fairer World, Gillygate: This small, independent shop has a range of lovely Mother’s Day cards as well as clothing, accessories & jewellery, and homeware. All the food they sell is organic and Fairtrade.
It’s a great place to find a unique gift.
The shop delivers locally for free, so if you can’t get out the house then you can give them a call or drop them an email to arrange a time for delivery.
The Yorkshire Wellness Box, Fulford: Ethical self-care kits are what every mum deserves and when they’re coming from an independent, York-based company, it’s even better!
From sleep wellness and better skin care to good chocolate and a cup of tea, everything is plastic-free and totally vegan. You can buy gift boxes or build your own box of things you know your mum will love.
You can view the full range of products in store or online.

Shambles Market, Parliament Street: Support local florists this Mother’s Day and head to the Shambles Market down Parliament Street.
The vast range of flowers and plants put most supermarkets to shame and shopping here supports a local business. Plus, they’re a great price!
Sustainable days out / experiences
Alpaca experience – Sheriff Alpacas, Strensall: For a totally unique gift, Sheriff Alpacas offer a range of ways to get up and close to their furry friends.
You can have a picnic with the alpacas, go for a walk with them or have 1-to-1 time with them (and a handler of course). All experiences can be booked online.
You can also check out their eco-shop which has products made from their own alpaca hair.
Ziplining – North Yorkshire Waterpark, Scarborough:
If you’re willing to take your mum outside of York then the North Yorkshire Waterpark are offering Mum’s a free go on their new zipline on Mother’s Day.
Enjoy a meal in their café beforehand and then get the adrenaline pumping with some ziplining.
This can be booked online or give them a call.
Garden visit to Goddards, York: The stunning scenery of Goddards House and Gardens spans across five acres of land with views of York Racecourse.
Spend a leisurely day wandering round the gardens and have a bite to eat in the tearoom there too. Remember your disposable cup and you’ll get a discount on hot drinks!
You can takeaway food from the tearoom to the terrace guilt-free with their no-plastic policy. All the takeaway packaging is fully compostable.
Afternoon tea – Heart Vineyard, Nun Monkton:
Afternoon tea is classic Mother’s Day gift, so this year make it unique with afternoon tea at the Heart Vineyard sipping on wine made there! It doesn’t get more local than that.
Not a fan of afternoon tea? No problem. Try a tour of the vineyard instead.
