A grass cutting machine hit a large gas main, causing a leak that closed a road and forced residents to close all their windows.
It has happened on the A61 near Ripley, north of Harrogate, at 6.33pm on Monday evening.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said at 6.49pm: “Local residents to Ripley A61 are advised to close all doors and windows due to large gas main rupture in the local area.
“The A61 Ripley is also currently closed to any traffic between Ripley roundabouts.”
The gas has now been switched off and the road has reopened.
The spokesperson added this update on Tuesday morning: “A crew from Harrogate and an officer from Ripon responded to reports of a grass cutting machine that had impacted a large gas main and caused it to rupture creating a significant leak.
“Crews stood by and assisted with traffic management whilst gas engineers excavated to locate the leak and worked to isolate the supply.”
