A garden bar is set to reopen in York this month.
As signs of spring and sunshine start to appear in York, so do the thoughts of sitting outside with a cold glass of something delicious – and this garden bar could be the perfect spot.
The Sketch Bar will reopen at York Art Gallery on Saturday 22 March.
The Sketch Bar is a cosy and casual bar that opened for the first time last year. It’s an extension of the Sketch cafe at York Art Gallery, which was founded by Maria Rodriguez and Philip Veal.
Situated on the upstairs terrace at the back of York Art Gallery, the bar has its own entrance at the back of York Art Gallery so there’s no need to buy a gallery ticket in order to visit – and it’s dog friendly.

The bar can also be accessed through the gallery itself, so you could finish your visit to York Art Gallery with a drink or treat.
Visitors to the bar can expect to find a selection of light bites, wine and cocktails available, as well as afternoon tea. The bar is currently taking bookings for afternoon tea on Mother’s Day, so why not treat your Mum to something a bit special.
The Sketch Bar will run alongside the new Harland Miller: XXX exhibition that opens this Friday (14 March) until Sunday 31 August 2025. It will feature a generous donation by internationally acclaimed artist Harland Miller of several important pieces of his work to the collection.
