Today’s A Level results prove just how important it is for schools to be forward thinking, says Head of Queen Margaret’s School for Girls, Sue Baillie.

After receiving excellent results this morning, students from the all-girls school in York will be going on to study cutting-edge courses including Games and Virtual Reality at Glasgow, Electrical Engineering at Southampton and Biochemistry at University College London.

“We’re delighted that so many of our girls have been successful in securing their first choice university course today at the country’s best universities. QM girls will take up places at many of the prestigious Russell Group universities, including Exeter, Sheffield and Manchester”, says Mrs Baillie

People often assume that all-girls schools are traditional and out of touch, but modern and progressive girls schools like Queen Margaret’s are far removed from this stereotype, they actively create an environment which empowers independent young women to do and be whatever they aspire to.

“Their time at Queen Margaret’s and the university places they have secured today will equip our girls for careers that might not even exist yet. The future is brightest for those with open, unfettered, socially and individually responsible minds” says Mrs Baillie.

Student Ella Conyers is celebrating today after achieving A*A*A – she studied Fine Art, Mathematics and Spanish, demonstrating just how multitalented the school’s students are and the importance of individual attention. Ella will go on to Leeds Arts University to study an Art Foundation course.

Ella’s father praised the school today; “Ella’s incredible results are the icing on the cake; with QM’s help and nurturing, our three daughters have all left the school as funny, confident, well-rounded and engaging individuals. We would like to thank all the staff for their amazing input over the years.”

Despite pre-pandemic grades being restored this year, and the fact that they couldn’t sit their GCSEs, today’s A Level recipients have wowed with their creativity. It was a clean sweep of 100% grades A-C in Music, Theatre Studies, Fine Art, Graphic Communications, Photography and in languages. “In a world of technological revolution, most clearly demonstrated by the rise of AI, we cannot underestimate the importance of creativity. It is a skill young people need for the future which AI simply cannot replicate” says Mrs Baillie.

Student Lauren Newbould, who has achieved her goal of studying an apprenticeship in Dental Nursing said “I’ve loved being a Sixth Former at QM, especially all the support I got from my teachers”.

September will see a brand new cohort of Sixth Form students embark upon their choice of A Level and BTEC courses, as well as a full timetable of exciting enrichment activities at the school; Head’s Awards are available to new students who join the Sixth Form next month.
