A former York headteacher and educationalist who founded a schools trust in the city has been recognised for his work in the New Year Honours.
Brian Crosby, who was chief executive of the Hope Learning Trust until July 2020, has been awareded an MBE for services to education.
Hope Learning Trust, which was founded in 2015 with Manor CE Academy and Poppleton Ousebank Primary School as founding partners, grew to a family of ten schools across York and North Yorkshire under Brian’s leadership.

Brian said “I am truly humbled to receive this award, but I really could not have achieved everything without the support of such wonderful colleagues over the years.
“I am truly honoured to have worked with so many young people and feel hugely privileged to have had the opportunity to positively impact on their lives.
“I truly believe that everyone has the ability to shine and it is our job as educators, to discover how they can excel.”

Brian trained as a teacher at the College of Ripon & York St John (now York St John University), graduating in 1981.
His career in education spanned 40 years, starting off as a science teacher, later progressing to head of year at Selby High School.
He moved to become head of science at Archbishop Holgate’s School and in January 2001 was appointed headteacher at Manor CE School.
Brian took the school from 640 pupils to the 1,100 enrolled at the school today, and it became the first York school to receive an Outstanding achievement from Ofsted, in 2007.
Although Brian officially retired from Hope in the summer of 2020, he has since been tempted back to head up another growing multi-academy trust in the county. He is now CEO of Coast and Vale Learning Trust in Scarborough.
