Fancy owning a piece of York’s history?
A remarkable home slap bang in the city centre is up for sale with many attractive features – including a hidden gem of a garden and ‘fabulous’ river views.
Hundreds of people walk past Lendal Hill House every day without realising what lies behind the 18th century exterior.
It is a three-bedroom, Grade II listed townhouse, tucked below Lendal Bridge.
Attached to the ancient Lendal Tower, it incorporates a length of rebuilt city walls. And it has its own private car parking space…
Dating from the 18th century, it was built as part of the York Waterworks which once supplied the city with water from Lendal Tower.
Lendal Hill House was owned by Col William Thornton of Cattal who established York’s first heated baths there in the 1700s.
There was one room for hot and tepid baths and another for cold bathing, both with dressing rooms.
Carter Jonas, who are marketing Lendal Hill House, point to the ‘mesmerising’ modern refurbishments.
It has been converted “into a unique property which boasts magnificent views of the River Ouse across the rear garden,” their details say.
“Superbly sited within the famous city walls, a stone’s throw from the station with beautiful streets, award winning restaurants, delicious delis, cafes and bars this really is an exciting and enviable opportunity to live in a charming property in the city centre.”
One thing to bear in mind. Being so close to the River Ouse means it does sit in a “high risk” flooding area, according to the Environment Agency.
Lendal Hill House is on the market for £795,000. That is substantially less than it was marketed for in 2020, when the asking price was £895,000.
