These pictures show the swish new dining destination at York’s only five-star hotel.

This is The Rise, which opens at the Grand Hotel & Spa on Station Rise on Thursday (June 1).

Described as “a vibrant all-day dining destination” it will be home to food and drink from award-winning chef Craig Atchinson.

Food and drink

Inside The Rise
Craig has created a modern menu “boasting the best seasonal and ethically-sourced ingredients”.

This includes a selection of small plates like

  • Leven Farm confit duck leg, Yorkshire chorizo, and butter bean ragout
  • marinated artichoke, sun blushed tomatoes, and Yorkshire Fettle salad
  • charred octopus, fennel salad, capers, aioli.

The Rise will also be serving larger plates for hungrier diners.

There will be a junior menu, sweet plates and cheeses, plus a breakfast offering including buffet and plated options, and a modern take on the classic afternoon tea.

What about the drinks? Cocktails include the rum-laden Ghosts of York and a Yorkshire Julep.

Plus there are local beers and ales and a hand-selected wine selection.

The Rise opens with an offer available throughout June: three dishes from the main small plates menu, plus free-flowing prosecco for £25 per person. This must be booked in advance

Created by London designers Twenty2 Degrees, the interior is inspired by the Edwardian home of the Grand.

A spokesman for the hotel said: “The decor pays homage to the building’s history including a pressed tin ceiling, dark stained oak panelling, and – as a nod to the North Eastern Railway, the building’s original 1906 resident – a locomotive-inspired black steel bar front, emulating the comfort and style of First Class train travel in the early 1900s.”.

The launch of The Rise will be followed later this year by the addition of the hotel’s new accommodation wing, and the refurbishment of Hudson’s fine dining restaurant.

Hotel general manager Philip Bolson said:

We’re certain that our offering of great food, exceptional service, and live music is the perfect addition to our city’s range of dining options.

It is an incredibly exciting time for those of us working here in the hotel amid our expansion and development.

The Grand is Yorkshire’s only five-star hotel as designated by the AA’s national star ratings scheme, the Hotel Quality Standards.
