With Mother’s Day on Sunday, 19 March 2023, here are some things to make the day special in York.
Plenty of families book in for a roast dinner or afternoon tea on the big day. These are classic traditions for many families – but why not try something different this year?
Here are some ideas, and we’re sure all of them will make your mum’s day.
York Cocoa Works
Who doesn’t love chocolate? Take your mum to York Cocoa Works on Castlegate for a sweet experience.
There’s a variety of chocolate making experiences that start from just £4.50, including chocolate lolly making, chocolate tasting and chocolate bar making all available daily.
If you want to splurge a little you can take part in an introduction to chocolate making masterclass, making, preparing and wrapping your own chocolate truffles, available Wednesdays and Sundays.
Spaces are still available for Mother’s Day (19 March). If you’re not available on the day, why not treat her to a gift voucher to redeem when she’s ready.
Askham Bryan Wildlife Park
Are you a family of animal lovers? Askham Bryan Wildlife Park is open weekends and half terms with animal talks all throughout the day, a café and gift shop. Tickets start from £5.95 but if you enjoy your day you can upgrade to an annual pass starting from £17.
If you really want to treat your mum you can get an animal encounter experience starting from £50, giving you a one-hour experience and includes your day admission.
For £20 you can have a 15-minute mini encounter with a choice of animals including meerkats, tortoise, goats, armadillos and the reptiles.
Mindlock Escape Room
Does your family work well as a team? Mindlock Escape Rooms on Tower Street give you the chance to test your thinking and teamwork skills as you work together and solve clues to escape a themed room within a one-hour time limit.
Four different themed rooms that take teams of two to six with different difficulty ratings, there is always one that will suit your family.
Depending on the number of members in your team, prices can start from £15 per person, with spaces still available for Mother’s Day on multiple rooms.
Geocaching
Are you an outdoor loving family? If you enjoy adventuring on walks and have children who love to explore, Geocaching may be the perfect free day out.
Whether you have the full day or just an hour, Geocaching is a perfect family activity that fills a few hours with excitement. By following a map on your phone, you can hunt down local Geocaches and get clues to help you find them.
You’ll be surprised what’s under your nose. There could be a cache under a bench your sat on, under a hidden rock or in a tree. When you find it, take the log book out, sign it and hide it again for the next person.
Rainbows ceramics
Is art a family passion? Rainbow Ceramics on Bootham is a lovely family activity where you can sit down and get arty by picking what you’d like to pain, pick your colours and get creative.
With a huge range of things to paint including Mother’s Day special items, the whole family will have plenty of options to what suits them. Prices start from £12 and no booking is required.
If you don’t fancy sitting in the studio you can order online, pick your paints and paint at home with a movie or takeaway and make a whole night of it before returning your pot to be glazed and finished at the studio.
