Firefighters from Tadcaster, along with police and ambulance crews, were called to deal with the accident.
They worked together to treat the casualties at the scene and make vehicles safe.
The driver, a male aged 17, and four girls all aged around 16, were taken to hospital. Although some injuries are serious, none are believed to be life-threatening.
Police sealed off the main A162 road while an investigation into the incident was underway.
Station manager Bob Hoskins of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue told YorkMix that because of the speed at which the impact happened, the crash could have been much more serious.
