Bank Holiday sunshine and our new-found freedom has led to a mass exodus to the coast today – and that has led to jams.
Just after 11am Highways England reported tailbacks of 5.5 miles on the A64, leading back to the A1079 junction.
It said: “There are now delays of 50 mins above normal travel time on the A64 eastbound east of York.
“You may wish to use alternative routes or delay your journey if travelling in the area this morning.”
One beleaguered traveller said: “It’s awful Slow moving. Try to avoid.”
The traffic was not helped by a collision which partially blocked the A64 eastbound between the A19 and A1079 earlier this morning. This has now been cleared.
At 12.30pm the AA was reporting:
- severe delays of 35 minutes and delays increasing on A64 eastbound between A19 (Fulford Interchange) and Sandy Lane – average speed 10mph
- queueing traffic on A64 both ways from A1079 Hull Road (Grimston Bar Interchange) to A64 (Barton Hill Crossroads) – travel time is around 40 minutes
- severe delays of 26 minutes on A64 westbound between A64 and Towthorpe Moor Lane. Average speed ten mph.
There are also severe delays reported on the A166 eastbound between Straight Lane and Burton Fields Road. The average speed is five mph.
