With prices going up, family days out can soon become expensive.

So we thought we’d search out activities in and around York that won’t break the bank this autumn.

Which ones do you fancy?

1. Ghosts in the Gardens

Back again for another year is York BID’s Ghosts in the Gardens. Forty-five ghost sculptures, created from narrow gauge wire mesh, are located across 21 gardens around the city. Can you find then all? The free display is running until 5 November, before the paid event Ghosts After Dark opens in Museum Gardens.

2. Meet Paddington

Paddington Bear has arrived in York! 🐻 Take a pew next to Paddington in Dean’s Park. The statue of the beloved bear was unveiled today by York’s Town Crier, Ben Fry, and the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr. Margaret Wells. It’s part of a nationwide trail to celebrate the forthcoming release of the new film ‘Paddington in Peru’ on 8 November. To mark the build up to the release of the movie Paddington In Peru, a statue of the famous Peruvian bear sitting on a park bench has been installed in Dean’s Park next to York Minster. You can sit with him and share a selfie – remember to pack a marmalade sandwich for the walk!

3. Family films

There are some great family films out there this autumn. And some good family bargains too. These include the City Screen York Kids’ Club. Every Saturday morning they show family favourites old and new on the big screen with tickets from £3.30.

4. Foss Fairy Trail

Here’s one for the kids or curious adults looking for a magical walk in the woods. The Foss Fairy Trail is a free river walk that’s run by the local community and can be accessed via the gate entrance just off Heworth Green. Go forth and explore the Fairy Kingdom.

5. York City Walls

If you love walking and would like to see the rich autumn colours from a different point of view, give a walk along the city walls a try. They’re open to everyone for free from 8am until dusk. The walls are about two miles long. And there are steps at the end of each section if you fancy taking a break for refreshments. They are unfortunately not wheelchair friendly.
