York nightclub Vudu Lounge is reopening this weekend – after an extensive refurb.
The venue on Swinegate – which has been closed for refurbishment since mid-April – reopens this weekend and reveals its all-new look.
York interior design company JMDA have been hard at work the past few weeks creating a new-concept club and lounge for the city – and now it’s ready to enjoy.
JMDA have worked closely with other well known establishments in York, such as Pairings Wine Bar, Dum Dum Tiki Bar, Ate O’Clock, and The Fat Badger.
This is the first time Vudu Lounge has been fully refurbished in over 17 years.
“Vudu will be a shining beacon on the streets of York, enticing everyone to experience a venue like no other,” said Emma Bassitt, designer at JMDA, explaining the concept.
“We aim to reveal the hidden gem of Vudu, building on its foundations to evolve the brand to ‘icon’ status, providing an experience that has to be seen to be believed.”
Key features include a curving whiskey wall, custom graffiti artwork, new backlit bar, bespoke feature lighting and a new VIP area for those special occasions.
“We took influence from the building’s urban features along with the already well-established brand of Vudu and overlayed this with layers of flamboyancy and glamour,” said Emma.
The project faced some challenges due to its size and location, combined with a tight turnaround and minimal time on site, however it’s “so worth it when you see the final reveal.”

The club and lounge will reopen from 8pm tonight – complete with a new cocktail menu.
Vudu Lounge will be open every day from 8pm to 4am.
It has been a fixture in York for nearly two decades, and last year opened its sister venue Dum Dum Tiki Bar in the ground floor of the same building. Vudu also has live DJs every day of the week.
“I hope that people will be drawn in by the dramatic change to the entrance of the space, and then hopefully completely blown away by the lighting design, technology and design features that we have packed into this venue,” said Emma.
“It really is one of a kind, and I am really excited to see peoples reaction to it.”
