Fire crews are have put out a large fire on Strensall Common this afternoon (Monday).
Crews from Huntington, Acomb, York, Malton and an all-terrain Argocat vehicle from Kirkbymoorside were called to the blaze, off Flaxton Lane, at 12.17pm.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson described it as a grass fire with a 500m fire front.
“Crew surrounded the fire and used beaters, knapsack sprayers, one hose reel jet and the Argocat to extinguish the fire, which affected approximately 2,000 square metres of grassland,” they said.
Strensall Common is both a Designated Special Area of Conservation and a nature reserve.
It is owned by the Ministry of Defence which uses it for troop training. Part of the common is given over to a cordoned off shooting range.
Fire has broken out here before, including in October last year when six fire vehicles were sent out to put out the blaze.
