Fire crews have been called to an incident on Strensall Common tonight (Wednesday 27 October)
These pictures from Lydia Waters, who lives in the village, showed a significant blaze.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that they sent six vehicles to the common to deal with a fire on an area of open heath around 500m x 50m.
The fire is now out.
Juliet Waters is in the village:
“Well first of all, my daughter’s partner came home, he’d been in York and he said that he’d had to ring the fire brigade because Strensall common was on fire and then while they were speaking to him somebody else apparently had run to say the same and obviously when he got back we looked out the windows to see if we could see anything.
“In the distance you could see a glow and we went to have look.
“When we got to the first cattle grid and you could see that there was quite a large patch of common on fire with lots of smoke.
“You could see torches of the firemen heading towards the blaze too and it was really windy which wasn’t helping”
