Bishopthorpe Community Festival has been cancelled this weekend.
In a post on Facebook they said the committee thought it best to cancel Sunday’s event in light of the Queen’s funeral on Monday.
YorkMix understands the vote wasn’t unanimous though, reflecting divided opinion on how to approach the period of national mourning.
Organisers said: “As a committee we stand united in this decision even with those who wish to voice their opinions in another way which has made this very hard decision even harder.
“The majority stand together and are all absolutely devastated that we have had to make this very hard decision.
“We have ALL worked extremely hard pulling the festival together, the whole team, but with the country in mourning we felt that holding a festival at this time was just morally wrong.”
The decision sparked a discussion about whether it was the right thing to do.
“Personally I think this this is the wrong decision at such short notice. It would have brought the community together again at this sad time and a good opportunity to celebrate the Queen’s life,” one resident said.
Another commented: “Your decision is what is felt right for all. The planning has not gone to waste as the event can be rescheduled and even moved indoors say for a Christmas fair.”
