Two North Yorkshire chippies have made a list of the best in Britain.

Newspaper The Times has compiled 23 of the UK’s best fish and chip shops.

And it includes venues in both Scarborough and Whitby.

In at number seven on the list is The Tunny Club on Sandgate in Scarborough.

The author of the guide, Chris Haslam, visited 543 beaches, and says: “No other chippy on the best beaches tour beat this.”

The report goes on: “The fish and chips are cooked to order here, which accounts for the fact they taste so fresh and consistently fabulous.

“You can dine at wooden benches in the historic, low-ceilinged fish bar, outside in the patio, or take your fish supper down to the seafront under a minute’s walk away. Fish supper from £7.95.”

The Tunny Club describes itself as “world famous” on its website, adding: “There have been many famous visitors to the Tunny Club including adventurers, socialites and film stars such as John Wayne, Lord Rothschild, The Astors, Errol Flynn, David Niven, Charles Laughton to name but a few whose footsteps you follow.”

And at number 22 in the list is the legendary Magpie Café in Whitby.

“We didn’t want the Magpie to be the best spot for fish and chips in Whitby yet again,” the guide admits.

“Such was our determination to dethrone a restaurant that celebrated its platinum jubilee in 2009 that we sampled dishes from four other outlets in the town. It was all for nowt, though, because none came close to the quayside queen.”

Also making the list were Whitehead’s Fish & Chips, Hornsea and Lighthouse Fisheries of Flamborough.
