There are plans to increase the frequency of trains to every half hour on the route from York to Malton and Scarborough.
At first it won’t be the full service which was suggested a few years ago when it looked like Northern would run on the route in addition to the TransPennine Express service.
Initially a half-hourly service would run in the “leisure peaks” on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays.
If that was successful then this could start the process towards a regular 30 minute frequency on the line through Malton.
Councillors on the Scarborough and Whitby Area Constituency Committee have been told extra trains could be introduced between Scarborough and York from next winter.
Currently the service is operated by First TransPennine Express and has an hourly service taking around 50 minutes.
Since the covid pandemic most of these trains terminate at York but some are now continuing to Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester
In January more than 40 per cent of TransPennine services were cancelled in a week and the company’s managing director, Matthew Golton, apologised for the poor service, stating the operator had a “recovery plan”.
