Extinction Rebellion York is to hold a march through York city centre this Sunday (21 July).
The climate emergency activists will march from St Helen’s Square to Millennium Bridge to celebrate local wildlife, draw attention to biodiversity loss and demand that the council restore nature in York.
Organisers say it is an “urgent call to action in the face of catastrophic wildlife loss across the nation and globally”.
Environmental groups from across York and the surrounding area, such as Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Yorkshire Rewilding Network, have been invited to take part.
Everyone can join the march.
The event, called Restore Nature York, is calling for more funding for nature-friendly farming, and cleanup fines for polluters.
Activists want to see the right to a healthy environment – in the form of clean air and water and equitable access to land – enshrined in law.
An XR York spokesperson said: “As demonstrated by the recent State of Yorkshire’s Nature report from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, this action is urgently needed to reverse the decline of local wildlife.
“It’s vital to protect the natural world around us and halt the devastating loss of biodiversity that we’re seeing.
“The massive Restore Nature Now march in London proved that the public cares about nature and so now is the time to keep up that pressure on local and national governments. We invite the people of York to join us and speak up for the natural world.”
