The mystery of the large sinkhole that opened up near a York primary school has been solved.
YorkMix reported last month that the hole had appeared near the junction of North Moor Road and the Old Village in Huntington, close to Huntington Primary School.
At that stage, even after weeks of investigations, neither Yorkshire Water or City of York Council had bottomed out the cause.
Now, though, the fault has been identified, and work is underway to sort the street.
In a letter to residents, the council says a specialist contractor had carried out ‘deep excavation works’.
“We have established the cause of the sink hole is a weakened Yorkshire Water sewer with a hole in the concrete pipe,” writes Andy Davies, head of highways asset management.
“Yorkshire Water has asked the council to carry out the repair works on their behalf and we are already underway with this. We hope to complete the works allowing the junction to re-open by Saturday 2 July.”
Until then, all access via the junction at the Huntington Working Men’s Club will stay closed.
“Our immediate priority throughout the works continues to be the safety of residents,” Mr Davies adds.
“We would like to reassure residents that the sink hole is enclosed with high steel fencing and that this will remain in place until the repair works have been completed.”
