A York bridge is to undergo repairs next week, after being branded ‘substandard’.
That verdict on Bishopthorpe Bridge was by the RAC Foundation, and led to a weight restriction being imposed.
Works to the bridge will commence on Monday 13 January, and are expected to continue for 12 weeks.
In order to strengthen the bridge and ensure its long-term future, a corrugated steel arch will be installed below it.
That means the path and cycleway which passes under the bridge will be closed, and users diverted between Appleton Court and Brunswick Nursery.
The diversion route will be located via The Orchard, Beech Avenue, Maple Avenue, Appleton Road and Copmanthorpe Lane. Signposts highlighting the changes will be installed in both directions.
Vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use Appleton Road and the bridge, with the weight limit still in place.
Bus routes will remain unchanged, and access to adjacent businesses, such as Brunswick Nursery, will also be maintained.
At times during the next three months, off-peak lane closures and two-way traffic lights will be in place on Appleton Road.
Cllr Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport said: “This important route is being repaired as part of our highway maintenance programme.
“Installing this new arch will mean that the weight limit can be lifted and the future of the bridge secured for the long-term.
“While we are doing all we can with our contractors, we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused while these essential works take place.”
Site staff will be on hand during the completion of the work, to advise and assist residents and businesses about any access restrictions.
Noise levels will be monitored throughout the works, and work will only take place between the hours of 8 am – 5 pm on weekdays.
Delays are to be expected, particularly when lane closures are in place, so drivers are advised to plan ahead when making any journeys in the area.
