Issued by North Yorkshire Police

Police have issued an efit of a man they would like to speak to in connection with an attempted burglary in Copmanthope, York.

At around 1.25pm on the afternoon of Friday 11 October 2013, the victim – a man in his 70s – disturbed the suspect who was trying to break into his house in Reygate Grove.

It is believed that the suspect had previously knocked at the man’s door before trying to gain entry through a downstairs window.

When the victim challenged the suspect, he ran off from the scene.

Police are appealing for anyone who either recognises the suspect from the efit or saw any suspicious people or activity in the Copmanthorpe area on Friday afternoon to contact them.

Police are also urging householders, especially if you have elderly neighbours, to be on their guard against unknown or suspicious people in their neighbourhood.

Detective Constable Adam Parkinson of York CID, said: “Thanks to the bravery of the householder in confronting the suspect, he fled the scene and did not manage to get in the house.

“However, we need to stop this man and prevent him from burgling any other properties.

“We are therefore asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time or can help identify the man in the efit, to contact the police.

“It’s vital that we all keep an eye out for suspicious people or activity in our neighbourhoods and help to protect our older friends, neighbours and relatives.

“Do not hesitate to call the police to report suspicious people, vehicles or activity in your area.

“Don’t worry about how insignificant you think it may be, always trust your instinct and report it as you could help prevent or detect a crime.”

If you can assist the police investigation into the attempted burglary, please call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Adam Parkinson at York CID.

Or you can email Adam by clicking here.

Alternatively you can pass information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

If you see a crime in progress, always call 999.
