A driver was killed after a lorry crashed into a bridge on the A1M early this morning (Wednesday).
The collision happened at about 2.10am on the southbound carriageway between Junction 48 (Boroughbridge) and Junction 47 (Allerton Park).
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “A HGV lorry collided with an overhead bridge near to the Allerton Waste Recovery site.
“Tragically, the driver of the HGV, a 31-year-old man, died at the scene.”
The southbound carriageway has been closed all day closed to allow emergency services to attend the incident and investigate what happened.
The spokesperson added: “It currently remains closed for scene recovery work to take place, two lanes are expected to open to traffic after 4pm.
“We’re now urging anyone who saw the collision or the HGV involved in the collision prior to it that has not already made contact to get in touch.
“Our officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have any relevant dashcam footage.”
However, police said they were set to take action against drivers seen filming the aftermath of the incident on their phones.
“It is illegal to use a mobile phone when driving. Sadly, we have witnessed motorists driving past and filming the scene.
“We have taken registration details of approximately 30 vehicles, and we will follow up with action against the drivers.”
One motorist responded: “I drove north on the inside lane and I’m still upset at what I saw. How anyone could film it is beyond me.”
