This was the scene next to a busy road south of York late this afternoon (Friday).
A field fire near Shiptonthorpe, York, was burning close to Shipton Lane.
Witnesses described flames going above head height in the field, while smoke clouded the air.
It comes after North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service issued advice to prevent fires on farmland in the county.
This included:
- straw and hay bales can spontaneously combust in hot weather, so check they are not overheating
- don’t discard cigarettes and glass as this can easily start a fire
- disposable barbecues – do not use these anywhere near farmland and crops.
The latest forecast sees the present heatwave lasting through the weekend, with temperatures reaching 31°C on Sunday in York.
A yellow thunderstorm warning is now in force for Monday.
