York will experience a mini-heatwave this week, with temperatures forecast to hit 30°C by the weekend.
The thermometer is forecast to reach 26°C on Thursday, 28°C on Friday and 30°C on Saturday.
Yellow heat-health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for Yorkshire from midday on Wednesday until 6pm on Sunday.
While hot weather is welcomed by many people, when it’s too hot for too long, there are health risks. In England, there are on average 2,000 heat-related deaths every year.
That has lead a York doctor to give advice on keeping everyone safe in the higher temperatures.
Dr Abbie Brooks, a GP partner at Priory Medical Group in York, said: “Whilst we want everyone to enjoy the good weather, the very young, the elderly and the seriously ill should take extra care.
Tips for the hot weather
“These groups are most susceptible to the risk of health problems when the weather is hot.
“The heat can make heart and breathing problems worse, and cause symptoms such as dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
“If you see someone struggling, offer them water and help them into the shade.”
