A hugely well-known pub south of York will close later this month.
The owners of Ye Olde Sun Inn at Colton said this week: “The sun is about to set on our amazing pub,” revealing it will close on Sunday 24 July.
But they say it will reopen with a new look and a new offer later in the year.
Ashley and Kelly McCarthy have run Ye Olde Sun Inn for 18 years, and bought the freehold in 2009.
They have established it as a go-to destination, with a great drinks offer, friendly welcome and fabulous food – with chef Ashley in charge of the menu.
In that time, they’ve won numerous awards, including Best UK Freehouse at the Great British Pub Awards, Yorkshire Pub of the Year and Licensee of the Year from the British Institute of Innkeepers.
Like every hospitality business, the pub was hit hard by Covid. They adapted by creating a takeaway and delivery service, and later created a heated outdoor area complete with fire pits.
In their announcement, Ashley and Kelly said: “The hospitality industry has changed significantly over our tenure-ship of this beautiful building, but not to the degree as we have seen over the last few years…
“That said, we have not thrown in the towel, we have not given up. The pub trade is all about diversification, and as an industry we are the best – we’ve had to be. We will be making a few changes and we will be back…
“We will be reopening later in the year. We will look different, our offering will be different – but we will still be here and offering first class hospitality that you have experienced with us over all these years.”

Customers responded to the news with affection and support. “You guys are pure class, so whatever direction you decide to go in I’m sure it will at very least match the successes you have had in this chapter,” said one.
And another wrote: “An amazing couple and amazing achievement with all you’ve done at the Sun Inn. Our very best wishes for the next chapter.”
