A crew from York tackled a deliberately started fire in a park today (Saturday), prompting the fire service to request assistance from the police.
Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at St Nicholas Park at 4:14 pm, following a similar incident at the same location the night before.
The blaze involved woodland branches and was extinguished using buckets of water and knapsack sprayers.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service told YorkMix that this location has become particularly problematic, with individuals repeatedly starting fires deliberately.
They said, “We have had to request a police presence to patrol the area as it’s becoming a common occurrence.”
The incident comes at a time when fire crews are especially reliant on their equipment, making deliberate fires even more frustrating.
This is due to an amber weather warning currently in effect for York, with the dry grounds increasing fire risk.
