Wimbledon is back tomorrow – and the Coppergate Centre is serving up the tennis in style again.
The shopping centre has teamed up with the York BID (Business Improvement District) to host Wimbledon on a big screen for the second year.
A lawn has been installed complete with deckchairs where you can take a break from your busy day and watch Djokovic and co battle it out on the grass.
Running daily for the entire fortnigh, the Coppergate screenings are found next to the Jorvik Viking Centre.
Plenty to see
The weather forecast for the tournament looks good, so hopefully spectators in York won’t be clamouring to get their hands on any of the 36 tennis ball-themed umbrellas which will be suspended down Coppergate Walk for the whole of July.
Centre manager Pippa Unwin said:
-
We were delighted by the response to our Wimbledon screenings last year, with many people hanging around to watch the last serve of the day, and we were remarkably lucky with the long, hot summer enabling play down at the All England Tennis Club almost every day.
We’re hopeful that there will be plenty to see, and we hear the ‘oos’ and ‘aahs’ as our visitors enjoy the thrill of each match.
With the addition of the brollies, and a new set of deck chairs for this year’s event, this is a wonderfully civilised way of spending a lunch hour – or even a lazy afternoon – in the heart of the city.”
The screen in Coppergate will show live matches as they air on BBC1 and BBC2 from 12 noon until around 7pm each day, including the Men’s Final on Saturday 13 July and the Women’s Final on Sunday 14 July.
