Goodramgate in York has reopened after a problem with its sliding bollards.

As we previously reported (see below) the city centre street was subject to an emergency closure on Tuesday.

It was “due to danger arising from an HVM bollard maintenance issue” – HVM stands for hostile vehicle mitigation.

The repairs took less time than expected and now Goodramgate is open as usual.

City of York Council said on X: “The repair works on Goodramgate have now been completed.

“Thank you for your patience and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

‘Danger from bollard issue’ leads to emergency closure of York road

A road in York city centre has been closed due to a problem with the bollards.

The emergency traffic order shut Goodramgate at 2pm today (Tuesday) and it will stay closed until 11.59pm on Thursday (26 September).

During that time, vehicles will be banned from driving down or waiting in the street.

According to the traffic order from City of York Council, the closure affects the road between the junction with Deangate, and 15m south of there.

It is “due to danger arising from an HVM bollard maintenance issue” – HVM stands for hostile vehicle mitigation.

The closure is to “ensure the safety of route users” and could end earlier than scheduled if the “danger has been rectified”, says the order.

“Traffic signs/barriers will indicate the extent of the prohibition,” it goes on.

“Additionally, the ‘one way’ direction of traffic flow in Goodramgate is suspended during the period of physical closure to allow two-way traffic flow.

“This notice does not prohibit works or emergency access within the closed road.”

James Gilchrist, director of environment, transport and planning at City of York Council, said: “Earlier today we became aware of an issue related to the operation of the sliding bollard at Goodramgate.

“Essential repairs are being undertaken on Wednesday morning by our contractors which should see the issue resolved.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to reiterate that businesses on Goodramgate will remain open while the works are being completed.”
