Cyclist injured in York – appeal to trace driver of car

Mon 18 Feb, 2013 @ 2.25 pm News Press Release

Issued by North Yorkshire Police

Police in York are appealing for witnesses and information about a collision which left a cyclist with a broken wrist and a car driver who made off from the scene.

It occurred at around 7.15pm on Saturday 2 February 2013 when a 20-year-old local man was cycling along the A1079 Hull Road heading out of town.

As he approached the traffic lights at the junction of Tang Hall Lane, a dark coloured old-style car pulled out in front of him causing him to apply the brakes sharply.

As a result he has thrown over the handlebars and suffered a broken wrist when he landed on the road.

He was taken by ambulance to York District Hospital where he underwent surgery.

The unknown driver of the offending vehicle did not stop following the incident and continued down Tang Hall Lane.

Police enquiries remain ongoing, including checking CCTV in the area.

Officers are also asking local people to come forward with any information that could help identify the driver of the car.

PC Hannah Dearden, of the York Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “It appears that the driver of the car was at fault as the victim on the bicycle had the right of way.

“When the car pulled out the victim had to brake aggressively to avoid being hit be the car, which resulted in a broken wrist that is still in a cast.

“I am appealing to the driver of the car to do the right thing and come forward to assist the investigation.

“Also, if anyone can possibly help to identify the driver or the dark coloured old-style car involved, then please contact the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.”

If you can assist, please call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Hannah Dearden. Or email [email protected]

If you would prefer not to give your name, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 12130025280.
