A thief on a bicycle smashed his way into Browns Department Store late last night.
Police were called at around 11.30pm on Thursday (12 September) after someone smashed a window at the front of the Davygate shop.
The thief stole bottles of perfume before cycling away from the scene – evading a civic-minded passerby who tried to stop him.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said:

The caller chased after the suspect and tried to detain him but unfortunately the suspect got away.
Inquiries are ongoing and North Yorkshire Police are asking anyone with information to get in touch.
Dior perfume worth around £1,000 was stolen, and the raider also caused around £2,000 damage to the front of the store.
Browns had to delay its opening this morning by an hour till 10am as they cleared up the mess.
Workers were replacing the damaged glass this afternoon.
