City of York Council is encouraging organisations and individuals interested in becoming involved in the Tour de France 100 Days Cultural Festival to attend a regional briefing at York on Monday 9 September from 10am to noon at York St John University.

This is one of a number of briefings held across the region by Maria Bota, the newly-appointed Festival Director for the Yorkshire Grand Départ Cultural Festival.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “This gathering is intended for artists, arts organisations, people involved in setting up festivals and events, the creative industries and educationalists involved in arts and events.

“It will be a good opportunity for those who would like to take part in the build-up to the 2014 Tour de France across Yorkshire to meet the regional organiser, find out more about the creative vision for the Festival, how to get involved and the commissioning process and guidelines around it.

“This is in addition to earlier meetings in York to identify local talent and ideas to entertain the crowds and cheer on the world’s cycling elite.”

As the Tour de France is the world’s biggest annual sporting event, watched by 3.5 billion people annually and broadcast in 188 countries, many of the performers and artists could be playing to a truly global audience.

Celebrations in support of the world famous cycling race will take place from 27 March 2014 to 5 July 2014 when Le Tour is welcomed to Yorkshire.

The event in York is one of a number held across Yorkshire in September including Halifax, Bradford, Sheffield, Scarborough, Harrogate, Leeds and Hull.

These briefings will be free and anyone interested in attending should register in advance at the Welcome To Yorkshire website.

All artists and arts organisations are invited to share their project ideas with City of York Council by Monday 30 September via the online portal.
