COVID care workers launch online candle company during lockdown
Whilst COVID-19 has proved devastating to local businesses nationwide, for some it’s proven to be motivation to leap feet-first into their own venture.
That’s certainly been the case for Danny and Rebecca, who’ve spent their spare time during lockdown planning out and launching their own small business, Galago Candle Co.
COVID-19 has played a significant role in the couple’s last year – working in residential care, they’ve both spent long hours looking after the vulnerable and limiting their social contact to prevent making them poorly. This inspired them to create something just for them – to make a dream a reality. Thus, Galago Candle Co was born.
Operating out of a small flat for the moment, Galago Candle Co has grown from an idea into a fully-fledged product range. Their website, www.galagocandleco.co.uk, has been received particularly well, with a surprising amount of orders coming in in only the few weeks. They specialise in eco-friendly, cruelty-free soy candles, and have spent most of their spare time away from care designing packaging, producing candles and trying to get their name out in the local community. “It’s been a journey,” says Danny, “and I think the extra time we’ve had to spend on our own has been a big motivator to get productive and make something of our time.”
Whilst they’ve only launched their signature range so far, along with a special edition Mother’s Day candle, they have big plans for the future. “We’re working on wax snaps right now, and wax melts in the near future. The biggest challenge has probably been making sure our candles and their packaging are truly eco-friendly. We don’t want our growth to come at extra cost to the environment.”
In the future the couple are hoping to try their hand at the York Christmas Market and continue growing their range to offer something for everyone.
