A couple managed to escape through a window after their flat was set on fire early this morning (Thursday).
In what police are describing as a serious incident, discarded items including a mattress were set on fire against the building.
A window in the flat blew out due to the heat, and the kitchen and hallway sustained extensive damage.
Emergency services were called to the blaze at Manham Hill, Eastfield, Scarborough at 1.39am.
Both Scarborough fire appliances went to the blaze. Two firefighters in breathing apparatus put out the fire with one hose reel jet.
Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured.
Fire service Station Manager Tony Walker said on Twitter: “The fire spread into the property and caused significant damage. No injuries reported. Fire and police are investigating the cause.”
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “This was a serious incident which caused extensive damage to someone’s home. A man and woman escaped and luckily no lives were lost.
“We’re urging anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact our officers as soon as possible.”
